I searched this question after losing 2 female zebra finches in a row. I found the answer. If you don't remove the outer covering of the cuttlebone, they eat the hard shell which causes internal organ damage and death. Scoop or cut out the inner, soft material of the cuttlebone in one piece and wire it to the side of the cage. Discard the rest. I wish I had learned htis sooner. Now, I'm watching the male for signs of stress, before I embark on buying yet another replacement finch.

Other causes of finch death include getting too cold, dirty water or lack of water, lack of grit, mites and lack of seed for over 24 hours.
