Lions can keep population of other animals in control. Lions often eat animals that are herbivores (don't eat meat). If lions didn't eat these animals, the population of these animals would get out of control and they would eat all the grass, leaves, etc. These animals would then have no food and species could go extinct because of the shortage of food. Other carnivores (meat eaters) would then have no food source (herbivores) and they would die off too.

Lions are predators at the top of the food chain. If there were no lions then there would be an outburst of herbivore population. Too many herbivores would result in shortage and depletion of grass, trees, leaves etc due to the wide scale consumption by the herbivores. Hence, the need of lions arises here.

Lions may possess unique genetic material important for research. Hence, to know the Earth and its inhabitants better, extinction should be controlled.
