The main weapon a bovine has (if it has it) is the horns on its head. But even on hornless or polled cattle, the bony potrusion between its ears and the hard skull can also be a lethal crushing weapon when necessary. A less painful defense or weapon is the cow's tail. It is swatted to remove flies. A cow can also kick with its legs. Getting kicked by a cow can be fatal because of its massive size.

They charge at whatever is about to harm their calf, and head-butt them. If they have horns they could also gore the thing (be it dog, coyote, human, etc.) in their attempts to protect their young.

When danger strikes, the first thing they do is run away, since they are instinctively prey animals and prefer to run away from the danger source instead of stand and fight. But if they are cornered, they will kick, butt, gore or trample the thing that is irritating them. If they got horns, watch out because a cow with horns knows she can gore a human, dog or horse if she gets the inclination to do so. Cows that are polled are also strong enough to crush a person's rib cage, or send someone flying. The forehead of a cow is very hard, and that poll at the top of the head hurts a lot and can cause serious bruising to a person or animal.

Cows that are protecting a calf won't bother running away, but will either charge at the source that may endanger her calf or only walk a short distance away but keep an eye on her while you quickly attend to her calf.
Cows will protect their calves physically by defending them from predators. They will use their hooves, head, and chest to attack the predator if it approaches.
