Ectotherms (from Latin for outside heat) are animals whose body temperature is controlled by their behavior or by their external environment. The term is generally applied to "poikilotherms" whose temperature fluctuates directly with the ambient temperature of their surroundings.

Formerly referred to as "cold blooded", ectotherms include reptiles, fish, and amphibians. "Warm-blooded" animals are also called "homeotherms" (Latin same temperature) and use their metabolism to heat and cool themselves.
