Leonbergers are a very large breed of dog. They are very beautiful looking as I myself have one. Leonbergers are rather placid and really intelligent, although they only expected to live to about 7 years, as they are a large breed of dog. They can sometimes be quite black, but sometimes blonde. Leonbergers have webbed feet because they are used in water rescue. My leonberger is only a puppy but has been swimming since he was about 3 months old, and loves it. You would really be missing out on a lot if you didn't have one.

Can leonbergers have a spotted tongues?

Absolutely :-). We have a leonberger with a large spot on her tongue (Shandel) and in her first litter, her son Ben also had a spot on his tongue. See our website leonburns.co.nz for photos or email me for photos that show the spots theleonbergerlady@gmail.com This tells me that the spots are hereditory. We have lots of leonbergers but only those two had a spotted tongue.

What was the Leonberger first bred for?

This breed was established in 1846 in Leonberg, Germany in the region of Wurttemberg by the German breeder Heinrich Essing from a crossing of theNewfoundland, St. Bernard, and the Great Pyrenees. Heinrich Essing's goal was to create a breed that would closely resemble the look of a lion. Leonbergers have been owned by many royal families including Napoleon II of France, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the Prince of Wales, Emperor Napoleon II, Bismarck, and Italian King Umberto. In the nineteenth century many Leonbergers were imported to Russia. Like many breeds, the world wars almost brought it to extinction. By the end of World War II, only a few dogs remained. In 1945, several Germans gathered some of the few remaining Leonbergers and re-established the breed. Today the Leonberger has regained his popularity in Europe. The official standard was set in 1949. The first Leonberger was imported to the United States in 1971. This versatile breed has been successful for guarding livestock, search and rescue, obedience, water-rescue, tracking and as a family companion.

What is the name of the dog breed that looks like a lion?

I believe it was a chow chow Chow chows look like lions. Rhodesian Ridgebacks were bred to help hunt lions. Leonbergers are bred to look like lions, in honor of the town Leonberg (German for Lion Mountain.) Then there's a toy dog whose hair is trimmed to look a bit like a lion--hairy in front, smooth in back, with a tuft on the end of its tail. Don't remember what kind that is right now.
