Purple Gallinules are water birds, and being omnivores, they eat a wide variety of foods. In this case they will eat practically anything that is edible, and so looking for food is not a big issue. They will eat seeds, leaves and fruits of both aquatic and terrestrial plants, as well as insects, frogs, snails, spiders, earthworms and fish. They have also been known to eat the eggs and young of other birds.
