Domestic cats aren't all that different from big cats such as lions. All members of the cat family are true carnivores which have to hunt and kill prey animals in order to survive. All species hunt in much the same way: Creep up to the prey as close as possible, then pounce on the prey. Cats have strong and compact bodies and legs, and are only capable of short bursts of speed when chasing down prey. Once caught, the cat will use their muscle power and weight to bring down the prey.

Cats, particularly the smaller species, have very large eyes. These are perfect for seeing clearly in low light. The hours around dawn and dusk are when a cat (and its prey) is usually the most active. A cat's long whiskers are also perfect for navigating spaces, especially in the dark. Padded feet help reduce sound when the cat is moving about, and most wild cats have patterning on their fur to help blend in with their surroundings. Even the most common Domestic Cat coat pattern (Tabby) is perfect for stalking around in undergrowth.

All cats have exactly the same type of teeth that is perfect for tearing and rendering flesh and crunching up bone: Large canines for holding prey, and scissor-like premolars and molars for cutting up meat into easy-to-swallow chunks.

Pet cats - like their wild cousins, get all their nutrition from meat-based proteins and fats, so feeding a pet cat food high in meat content and no grains or cereals is the best way to ensure your cat gets all the nutrition it needs.

Most cats are also good climbers, using trees or rocks as lookout posts for stalking prey or to retreat to, and hide in, when threatened. Retractable claws are essential for many things: From grabbing and holding prey, climbing, and fighting or self-defence. A cat's long tail also has an essential use of helping a cat balance when climbing or hunting.
