At some point in their lives, a chordate will have a notochord, a nerve cord that runs down their back, and a slit in the throat area. The phylum name Chordata came from the notochord, a flexible rod that supports the back. They include fishes, amphibians, and reptiles.
(I got this answer from my science textbook)
Characteristic features of Chordata
1. The chordates are one of the most diverse and successful of all animal groups.
2. They are found in all regions of the world.
3. They have a skeletal rod called Notochord, lying on the dorsal side of the body.
4. There is a nerve cord that lies dorsally in the body, directly above the notochord.
5. There is presence of Pharyngeal Gill slits atleast at the embryonic stage.
6. Digestive system, Circulatory system and Nervous system are well developed.
7. Those animals in which the notochord is replaced by a series of vertebrae are called as Vertebrates.
8. Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, and Mammalia are some of the classes of Phylum Chordata.
They have bilateral symmetry, are coelomates, complete digestive system, and live in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater.
All chordates have pharyngeal slits, which are openings that connect the inside of the throat to the outside of the neck, often used as gills. Their main feature, the notochord, a bundle of nerve fibers which connect the brain with the muscles and organs is present in all chordae's as well.
In chordates, four common features appear at some point during development: a notochord, a dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, and a post-anal tail.

Chordate
Chordate pharyngeal slits initially functioned in filter-feeding to help retain food particles in early vertebrates. Over time, they evolved to serve multiple roles in respiration, sound production, and communication in different chordate species.
Ants and all other insects are non-chordates. Insects belong to the subphylum arthropoda. Animals that are vertebrates are considered to be chordates.
A chordate family tree is a graphical representation of the evolutionary relationships between the various animal species that have backbones.

Being 'chordate' means that the animal has a backbone.
I do not know to be honest, sorry.

An insect, such as a butterfly, does not belong to the chordate phylum. Insects belong to the phylum Arthropoda.
Frogs have notochords that allow for muscle attachment and support. They also have a backbone. All amphibians are classified as a chordate.
