The lungs of birds are far more efficient than those of mammals.

Firstly, the lungs in birds do not expand and contract like those in a mammal. The lungs in birds are connected to caudal and cranial air sacs, which are the sections that expand. The air in the caudal air sacs is "fresh" air, which is displaced during inspiration - when it then flows through the lungs. The cranial air sacs are full of "stale" air, which flows out of the trachea during expiration.

This means that unlike mammalian lungs, there is unidirectional air flow in avian lungs (air only flows in one direction). During both inspiration and expiration in the bird, fresh oxygenated air flows through the lungs. This makes the lungs very efficient, which is especially important during flight.

Mammals have blind-ending sacs (alveoli), whereas birds have air capillaries - which are loops between the parabronchi where gas exchange occurs. It should also be noted that unlike mammals, birds do not have a diaphragm - which means they can store air in their abdomen.
