What are the disadvantages of farming fish such as salmon for human food?

Using farmed fish allows the wild varieties to maintain numbers in the wild. Many species have been over fished and will not survive without being given the chance by restrictions being put in place. Farming fish can supply humans with all their requirements if managed appropriately. There are some disadvantages to farming them in that, being confined in close quarter with many other fish, disease is more prevalent amongst them. This usually means that they have to be fed antibiotics which then find their way into the food chain and can affect humans who eat them if not monitored rigorously. Another advantage of farming fish is that it eliminates the need for people to put their lives at risk as many do on the open seas each year. One of the advantages of gathering fish from the wild is that they tend to taste better as they feed wholly on a natural diet. This is, of course, because we prefer what we are used to and so the perception of what tastes best could change as more people get used to farmed fish. It irritates me when fishermen complain that the seals/dolphins/otters etc are depleting the fish stocks. If fish were only eaten by the creatures who relied upon them for survival then the balance would have been maintained in the wild. It is we humans who have done the damage with modern fishing methods and greed.
