In the frog's mouth there is a front hinged tongue. This flips food into the gullet, which is the entrance to the esophagus. The food is moved down into the stomach by muscle contraction. The stomach breaks food down mechanically using its multiple muscle layers. It also secretes enzymes to convert complex nutrients into simpler ones. The enzymatic breakdown continues in the small intestine where the simpler nutrients are also then absorbed. The left over material is passed on to the large intestine where water may be absorbed from the mixture.

Digestion for the frog begins in its mouth where it can grind up food with its maxillary teeth. It then moves from its esophagus into the stomach area. It then goes to the small intestine where enzymes from the pancreas and liver that proceed to digest the food. It then enters the large intestine where the water is absorbed, and the waste taken away.

The openings could be one of the following 3 hole/s you see:

  • Eustachian Tubes
  • Esophagus
  • Glottis

Most of us have done a frog dissection in school at one point or another and the inside of the frogs mouth can look very confusing.

When you pin back the top of the mouth and stare at the frog (it looks as though he is opening wide, like you do when you visit the dentist), you will see the following:

  1. . Esophagus opening.
  2. . Vomerine teeth.
  3. . Grove of the maxilla.
  4. . Maxillary teeth.
  5. . Internal nare.
  6. . Eye ball.
  7. . Eustachian tube opening.
  8. . Jaw ridge.
  9. . Underside of the tongue.
  10. . Glottis.
  11. . Cut muscle and bone.
Which hole does what? The two openings, or holes on the side of the frog's head are the Eustachian Tube openings, which pretty much regulate air pressure.

The wide opening in the center of the frogs mouth is the esophagus, the muscular tube that enables the frog to swallow and digest food.

The tiny Glottis 'hole' is a tube used for breathing that leads to the lungs and is located under the Esophagus.

How does a frogs tongue adapt to their life?

Its muscles cause it to curl up into his mouth. The tongue sits at the front of the mouth, rolled up, when not in use. Point worth noting: Not all frogs have long tongues. Ground frogs that eat ants etc. that are close to them do not.
