As domestic dogs have been selectively bred by humans for more than 6000 years, their appearances have been shaped by human breeders rather than natural selection. Hence dogs are not 'adapted' to their environments, but selected by humans to fit the desired job they are bred to do.

However, dogs as a general species are known to have exceptionally sensitive noses, which are evident to different degrees in all dogs. This sensitivity is an adaptation for tracking prey and identifying territory occupied by other dogs. They have a deep ear canal which not only gives them acute hearing but the ability to discern the direction of a sound, which is a useful adaptation for hunting prey. a they also have strong canine teeth for tearing their food.
