Turkey vulture. Their nostril are so developed that they make a hole right through the beak.
Incorrect, the Turkey Vulture does not hunt, it scavenges off carion. The Kiwi Bird is the only bird to actually HUNT using their sense of smell.
There are three groups of birds that feed using smell to locate food...
Kiwis, whose eyesight is so poor they use smell to locate worms
Tubeforms (Albatross and Petrels) who use oil slicks from oily fish to find schools of fish
Vultures which don't often attack healthy animals, but to say they only hunt carrion is not quite true.
A bird dog is a dog that either hunts ( chases and kills) birds, or helps the hunter chase birds( by pointing toward them, flushing them or finding the birds)
There is a bird species with a curious relationship with nesting alligators. When the gator hunts; the bird will guard it's own nest and that of the gator. The bird also serves to provide an early warning system to any potential danger. In exchange, the gator provides "the muscle" and the bird is protected from predators both to it's self and it's nest. I was wondering what this bird species is called. Thanks.
The only bird that can smell is the turkey vulture - the world's #1 smeller! It can smell dead meat from 5kms away! Other birds have no sense of smell which is why they can be sprayed by a skunk and not care.
the female lion hunts more than the male. because the female hunts 97% of the time. and the male lion hunts 3% of the time and stays behind to keep watch of the pride
The Hoatzin is a bird from Ecuador. It is known locally as the 'smelly bird' or 'stink turkey' because of its strong unpleasant smell. It has never been a popular dish. Young birds actually have claws on their wings, as if this is an ancient species.Scientific Name -- Opisthocomidae hoazin
The bird with the keenest hearing is probably the owl. It hunts at night, and it must be able to hear its prey better than other types of birds which hunt by sight, by smell or by feel.
