Most blood spots come from young hens who are adjusting their laying apparatus so to speak. The yolk of an egg is formed in the hens follicular sac. When this matures and is ready to make the trip down the oviduct, it ruptures or splits, usually along a line with no or few blood vessels. Should a blood vessel have crossed the stigma, a blood spot will occur and be deposited on the yolk as it leaves the follicle. Other than being ascetically

unacceptable to some, a blood spot will not harm you when eating the egg.

As a hen matures and ages out of the laying cycle, the same thing can happen.
