Often called a scop, the poet told older stories and embellished them, or changed them. Although the poet knew his material well, he always varied it in one way or another. The Anglo-Saxon scop, or poet, used certain set formulas to relate a new tale or to adapt an old one. In the oral tradition, each telling differed from the last.
