For pet cats, it is ideal to feed them a diet of high quality pet food that has a high quantity of meat and meat proteins in. Named meat sources are considered best and provide a better quality of protein, and should be the first thing on the ingredients list. Plant matter, such as corn, wheat, soy and other cereals should be in either a very limited quantity or not present at all; cats cannot gain any nutrients from plants and have trouble digesting them.

While not a food, water in cat food is also very important, if not one of the most important part of a cat's diet. Cats are notoriously bad drinkers, even when they are thirsty. This is because they have evolved to get all their needed moisture from their prey (their ancestors were cats that lived in very dry and arid environments where water was hard to come by), so therefore have a low "thirst drive" and will not often seek out water on their own.

Canned or pouched food has anywhere between 60 to 80% water. Seeing as in the wild a cat's prey is around 65%-75% water, wet food provides a cat with more than enough water each day.

Not all cats eat the same thing... Domestic cats tend to eat things like chicken and fish(meat) and wild cats tend to eat mice and rats and other wild things(plants and animals)
