However, for these poor kitties, life involves a lot more work and difficulty - they must scrounge or hunt for food, they must evade predators, and they must try to find a safe, sheltered, hopefully warm and dry place to be. Feral mothers have it probably the hardest - they often find that they need to move their kittens from place to place to place to keep them alive. Also, feral cats often only get enough food to barely keep themselves alive, so having kittens nursing can make mommas very, very skinny and sick. Life on the streets is very tough for any feral cat, though. Feral cat colonies tend to run rampant with diseases - FIV, FIP, Feline Leukemia, upper respiratory infections - and this combined with predators, cars, and extreme heat or cold, makes for a short and difficult life. This is why it is SO important to work with local animal welfare groups to get ferals spayed and neutered. Most fairly large cities have an organization that will do "TNR" which stands for Trap-Neuter-Release. This is where they use humane traps to trap the ferals, they get them spayed or neutered, and then they release them back to be with their colonies. This stops new litters from being born, and so the number of ferals doesn't continue to grow and grow and grow.
