They actively hunt for it - following scent trails. They subdue their prey either by venomous bite or constriction.

Although some snakes actively hunt their prey, many are ambush predators. They'll lie in wait under debris for their prey come within striking distance, sitting out near their prey's homes and getting them when they return, etc. Ball pythons are also well known for living in the network of tunnels in termite mounds where mammals hang out and eating all the inhabitants before moving onto the next mound. Water snakes will sit in the water, maybe with their head extended out of a burrow with their head floating at the water's surface, waiting for fish or frogs to swim nearby.

What animals do snakes compete with for food?

Different snakes have different dietary requirements, so ratsnakes would not compete with animals which do not eat rats. Some snakes eat insects, and some eat other snakes. Some snakes eat eggs. Depending on their diet, snakes compete with certain birds, mammals, amphibians, and other reptiles, and sea snakes compete with fish and other sea creatures which eat the same prey as they do.

Can snakes eat dog food?

When hungry, snakes will eat just about any food : birds, frogs, mice, and other dead mammals. Only a large or venomous snake could kill an adult dog, and few would be able to eat one, except to feed on a carcass. Snakes eat dogs because they can. For a snake, there is no difference between types of prey. A snake will eat whatever it can overpower and swallow.

Does bacteria eat snakes?

No, bacteria do not eat snakes. Bacteria are microscopic organisms that primarily feed on decaying matter or other organic material. Snakes are much larger organisms that are typically consumed by other animals as part of the food chain.

Do Florida king snakes eat when they are shedding?

Florida king snakes may still eat while shedding, but some individuals may refuse food due to the discomfort of shedding. It's important to offer food as usual and monitor their eating behavior during this time. If they refuse to eat, do not force them to do so.
