people think pig are dirty and muddy but they are actually really clean. they r also very intellegent.

Pigs can be kept outdoors or in confinement. In confinement they often have a pen or stall all to themselves where they eat, drink and sleep. Boars are often in a separate pen to the sows and gilts to prevent any accidental breeding or any squabbles happening that would put the barn staff and the pigs involved in danger. Sows and gilts that are ready to be bred are put in a room where they can smell the boars, because these pheremones from the boar make them go into heat. They can only smell or see each other but not come into contact with each other.

Sows that are about to give birth are moved into a farrowing barn or room where their movements are limited so that they don't lay on or crush their newborn piglets. The piglets have two spaces on either side of the sow to run to depending on which side the sow lays on to allow them to nurse, and also to sleep, play and run around.

Weaned piglets are put in a barn or room after weaning where they are put on a special diet that lets them get used to being off of their dam's milk and going onto full feed. These pens often have 5 or more stoats (young pigs) in them, where they can have social, physical and emotional time with other pigs and can feed and drink at the same time.

As these stoats get older they are moved into pens but with less other pigs to share it with. The pigs that are marketed to slaughter are often in a pen by themselves or with another pig. Most cases they are by themselves to prevent them chewing on each other out of boredom.

Like any pig outdoors, they eat and sleep for most of their lives.

Outdoors, pigs either have a barn or large shelter they can move in and out of, or they have a hut called an A-frame. An A-frame is a hut about five feet tall and about five feet wide at the bottom. It is shaped like an inverted "V" or and "A". It has one entrance and the back is closed. One or two pigs may sleep in it and even raise their off spring. Generally, only female pigs live together in one area, once the breeding has been accomplished.

Pigs sleep on their side. When they get up, often one side is dirtier than another. Pigs are always provided water. They are often fed in a trough system of some sort. The trough feeders are round and have a large central barrel that holds ground up grain which drains into 2 foot areas below with metal lids. The perimeter of the bottom of the barrel is surrounded all the way around with these two foot areas. There are about a dozen of the areas around the bottom of the barrel. As grain is eaten, more would drain into the area. The pig lifts the lid with her snout, sticks her head inside and eats and then leaves. The lid makes a LOUD bang when the pig drops it back in place. For entertainment, the pig often lifts and drops the lids. (I think they know it annoys humans)

Pigs wander around. They have a definite social order. Once in awhile. there is a rearrangement of the order. This involves noise and challenging tosses of the head. Frequently it involves some pushing, shoving and tail biting. Which is the reason for clipping tails on new born pigs. Maintaining the social order requires loud high pitched whining.

Often, a farm will have different sizes and ages of pigs. They are sometimes sorted by size and kept in different areas of the farm site.. If the farm raises pigs from birth, the mama pigs will need to be separated from the babies. It is ideal if this separation can be in completely different farms. Otherwise, pigs are excellent escape artists and they will find their way back to each other.

Pigs love mud. It keeps them cool. They lay in it and dig in it (with their snout). It also provides some entertainment.

Often, pigs entertain themselves by escaping. They are very clever and given any opening, they can find a way out. It seems that rarely do all of them escape at one time. Normally, a few find their way out and the rest stay put. This means that when you put the escapees back in the pen you must be careful not to let the others get out. Pigs are good runners. They have four legs and you only have two. Always remember to keep two legs under you at all times. Sticking a leg out to block the pig from going a certain direction will land you on your backside every time. A pig is stronger than you. They can be particularly stubborn about refusing to go where you want them to go.

Pigs have to eat certain feed to stay healthy. Grain, some grass and lots of roots and tubers, as well as worms, mushrooms, small rodents (occaisonally), and scraps off of the farm's kitchen table are some of the things pigs love to eat.
