elephants primarily use their tusks to pry bark off trees, dig in the ground and for some amount of intra-species conflict resolution (i.e. hitting other elephants).

They also use them as weaponry, spearing predators like lions that may pose a danger to the calfs.

They'll also use them like a table, spreading their food out on their tusks in front of them so they can get a better look at it and manipulate it more easily with their trunks.

Elephant tusks are sold for about $1,000 per pound and rhino horn is sold for $30,000 per pound so money. Rhino horns are believed to cure cancer and fever and elephant ivory is carved into jewlry or utinsils.

They (poachers) generally hunt species that are in a protected area. Example would be elephants in a safe protected area by law, being hunted for their ivory tusks.
