Dewclaws are the "fifth finger" on the dog's front legs. Since dogs essentially walk on their toes, the dewclaw - the dogs thumb - usually dangles uselessly several inches above the ground. The dewclaw can catch on brush, logs, rocks, or other trail obstructions the dog has to navigate over, under, or around. A torn dewclaw can bleed a lot, but generally it isn't a serious injury. The prescribed treatment is to stop the bleeding through direct pressure. Next, wrap gauze around the dewclaw and leg, then wrap tape around it to hold the dewclaw firmly to the leg. Don't wrap too tightly, however, or you'll constrict blood flow into the lower leg.
Hopefully take doggy to the vet and have it removed, the dew claw is not a necc, part of the anatomy, and most people have their dogs "dew clawed.
Run the pet to the vet now. Do not be panicked if he or she starts bleeding.
If you suspect your dog has an ingrown dewclaw, it is best to seek the advice of a veterinarian. There is no treatment for this rare condition and surgery is the best option.
first i would try to put some medical disinfectant on it like TCP for a few days and if it does not get better take the cat to the vet
Go to the vet!
Lots of dogs have a "dew claw"; it is not specific to any breed.
The dew claw is a primitive digit that doesn't actually serve any purpose. Many breeders have them removed so that they do not become ingrowing or snag when the dog is older.
If the dew claw is not removed properly, then yes, it may grow back deformed. In this case a vet will have to remove it whilst the dog is under general anaesthetic.
border collies, Maltese, Aussie shepards, and maybe the blue heeler.
All breeds of dog have atleast two dew claws (unless they are removed) but a pedigree Great Pyrenees should have a dew claw on each front leg and double dew claws on both hind legs.
It's called the dew claw.

The dew claw is on the back of the front leg about an inch above the foot of a dog. Some people have them removed when the dogs are puppies. If not, you will feel a nail, just like a dog's toenails, protruding from that area. It is said that it is called the dew claw because it merely touches the dew on the grass as a dog walks.

Dogs have a small, primitive digit (fifth toe) on the inside of their front legs. This is called a dew claw. As the dog does not need it, many breeders pay for a vet to remove it, hence dew claw removal.
Dew claws need to be removed only if they are becoming a problem to the dog such as the animal chewing on them or the claw getting caught and torn. Some show dogs have them removed for show purposes as well as hunting dogs as a precaution.
If your dog keeps licking his front dew claw, that appears loose but not infected, you should take the dog to the vet. The vet can treat or remove it so that the dog does not get it caught on anything, and so it does not become infected. The vet can also bandage the paw to keep it clean.
A dew claw on any canine animal is the solo claw on the paws behind all the rest. You can equate it to the thumb on us humans. It is on the inside portion of the leg and if you check on any dog you can feel it about .5 to 1 inch behind the rest of the claws.
the best way to stop a dew claw from bleeding is to keep it trimedKneel down on the ground and gently roll the dog onto its side. Once in this position, maneuver your body above the dog, then pet the dog while occasionally touching its paws.Hold a pair of nail clippers designed for dogs in your predominant hand; lift your dog's paw with your other hand. Pull the dew claw slightly away from the paw to gain more access to it.3 Snip the tip of the dew claw, being careful not to cut the quick--the inner part of the nail that contains blood vessels.
Some Border Collies and Aussie Shepards have these. #2: My Maltese mix has four dew claws.
Usually no, unless for some reason blood flow has been stopped to the leg. If the dew claw is removed when the puppy is between 3 and 4 days old, then there will be very little blood loss.
