Most wild bird species in the U.S are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Act Treaty of 1918. It is illegal to take and keep a bird, its babies, eggs, feathers, nests, body parts, etc, even if it is injured and you have good intentions. There are licensed wildlife rehabilitation who have extensive training will be able treat the injury, care for it properly and release it back to the wild. Until you can get the bird to a wildlife rehabilitate (ASAP, many injured birds need immediate help), put it in a dark box lined with a soft towel. Put the box under a heat lamp or on a heating pad in a quiet place and offer some fresh water.
How to locate a wildlife rehabilitate near you: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm
Further:
In some cases rehab centers are some distance away and they may or may not come to you, depending on the species. Another thing you can do is call a local University if one is nearby and get in touch with their biology department. Some universities have people on staff that are qualified and licensed animal care givers. At the very least they can give you contact numbers for rehab centers or your state fish and wildlife office.
It really depends on the injury itself.
If for example the bird has a broken wing, I recommend you not tie a piece of wood to it like in the movies.
Also, the bird may be scared of large objects, like yourself, and you don't want to cuddle it or anything because stress may make this worse.
First off Be VERY gentle when you pick him up. Put one hand around his wings so he doesnt fly off, And with the other one hold his feet so they feel secure. Make sure u don't squeeze him too tight or on his wounds. Then Move him to a box or anything that is SAFE and give him some cusion to sit on (such as shredded newspaper or soft woodchips) You can either wrap his wings or his new "nest" have a cover you can close. If he is injured you don't want him to be flapping around. Once that's done keep him in a quiet place. Try to Give him food (mealworms, earthworms, crickets, and any fruits) and Water but don't force him.
All while doing this try to find a liscenced Bird rescue to bring him to. If its a baby it will need critical attention to survive. Unless your ready to spend your life with him and maybe get in trouble with state laws (if they have a law that u cant keep wild birds) Depending on the injury he may or may not survive.
See if you can find a veterinarian that treats birds to see if they could help. If not, you could try tending to the bird yourself. Worst case scenario is asking the vet to humanely put the bird down.
you take it to a animal shelter or a zoo or something like that
Take it to a vet, who can treat it, and then will had it over to a wildlife rehab group.
