What do you do when a chick hatches?

Chicken will lay eggs all by themselves. Keep nesting boxes clean and dark in a quiet area of the coop. Feed the pullets a good quality laying pellet/feed and provide plenty of fresh water. The laying hen requires at least 14 hours of light either natural or artificial, daily.

well after about 2 years a hen will not normally produce as many eggs. They are called a "spent hen" in the industry due to this. But if you hen is going through molt she might also not be producing. In the center of the box place a lid, like a peanut butter jar lid filled only halfway with water.

Place a thermometer on in the bottom of the box.

Next hang or attach a heat lamp to the box so that the temperature on the thermometer is about 90.

Place this box in an area that will be out of direct sunlight and is not drafty.

Keep the box clean, the food and water filled, and in a couple days change the paper towel to just pine shavings.

Ideally, you should collect your eggs several times a day. Though, once a day is just fine. Hens lay their eggs during the daylight hours. So, every evening is okay. The reason to collect them often is to pevent them sitting there a long time to be stepped on and broken. Eggs do NOT need to be refridgerated immediately. In fact, they don't need to be refridgerated at all. Though, whereas they will stay fresh for two months, or so, (IF THEY ARE NOT WASHED), they will go bad in just a few weeks if not in the fridge. When a hen lays an egg she coats the outside with a membrane (called the "bloom") which makes the egg shell more impervious to air. An egg shell has around 6000 pores in it which allows air to get get in and moisture to get out. Commercial eggs are washed. It makes them look "prettier," but it also makes them go bad faster. Through the pores bacteria gets in which makes the egg go bad. At some feed supply stores, one can buy an ointment (from Australia) to coat eggs, and seal the pores, that is guaranteed to keep the eggs fresh - unrefridgerated - for ONE YEAR!

Otherwise, if you have a rooster and there's a chance they're fertile, then you can leave them outside with the hens and let them brood naturally. There are several things that can happen. If the egg is laid by a brood hen, the egg will join the clutch and be incubated by that same hen within 6 days. The egg could be collected for food by a human. The egg also could be taken by a predator and consumed. There is also the chance the egg will crack, break and be consumed by other members of the flock.

You cannot make a chicken lay eggs. There are certain things you have to have to have a laying hen.

• Make sure you have a hen and not a hen-feathered or an immature rooster
• The hen has to be at least 5 months old before you see the first egg.
• The hen must have adequate nutrition, water, space and ventilation.
• The hen must not be under any stress, such as weather extremes, poor diet, crowded flock conditions, area that is safe and free from parasites and predatory animals.
• Have some idea as to the chicken's genetic makeup. Some breeds lay 6 eggs per week while other will only lay 1 egg per week.
• If you still don't get eggs, have your local vet check the chicken(s). There might be a disease of condition that is not obvious to a novice grower.
