Hi, I'm from Australia and we have different terminology to the US so I'll try to answer in US terms. HMA consists of several components the 2 most prevalent ones are a. aggregate b. bitumen Each of these components have different thermal behaviours. The differential thermal contraction is the difference in contraction between the bitumen and the aggregate for a given temperature regime E.g. for a -10 deg change in the ambient temperature over an hour, the aggregate will lose less heat and contract less (if at all) than the bitumen over the same period. The difference in the change in contraction of the aggregate and the bitumen is the differential thermal contraction. This phenomenon is something that needs to be considered in freeze/thaw environments as large in-service temperature changes can shock and weaken the HMA layers. The AASHTO Guide has some useful information in it regarding freeze/thaw environments and the time-temperature dependency of HMA.
