The 8 processes

  • Growth- occurs as a process of production of new cells, and the ability to increase in size
  • Reproduction- ability to produce more of your own species. only life process that doesn't need to be fullfilled. two types of reproduction are sexual and asexual.
  • Respiration- ability to convert food into a useable energy. is a celluar respiration, meaning it doesn't involve breathing. two types are aerobic, requires oxygen to break down food and occurs in the mitocondrea, and anaerobic, doesn't require oxygen for food to be broken down and occurs in the cytoplasm of a cell.
  • Synthesis- ability to manufacture materials not given by the environment. involves using simple materials and chemically combine to form complex materials. produces materials that become part of the body. used to repair cells that grow and help body functions. examples are: amino acids + amino acids = protein, and sugar + sugar = starch.
  • Nutrition- ability to obtain and process food. two types are: autotrophic, organisms that can produce their own food, and hetrotrophic, organisms that obtain energy from the food they eat. this occurs in three parts: ingestion, taking in food, digestion, breaking down food, and egestion, gets rid of solid waste.
  • Excretion- ability to remove waste from blood, tissue, and organs. it doesn't refer to removing solid wastes. for example, plants excreate oxygen.
  • Response- ?.
  • Transport- ability to move an object to, out, or throughout. it involves absorption and reaistribution.
