What does it mean if your guinea pig has blue eyes?

To see what your guinea pig's eye colour is you just need to look at his/her eyes in sunlight. That's how I found out my guinea pigs Elvis and Jerry-Lee both have brown eyes.

Just to update Jerry-Lee died yesterday Sept 24 2009 from an infection and he was only one and a half years old born in Dec 2007 :'(

Yes, guinea pigs can have blue eyes. It's rare, but it does happen. There are some breeders that breed for the blue eyed trait and typically this variety of guinea pig falls under the category of "Self".

If your guinea pig has cloudy blue eyes (it's easier to tell if held near a light) it could be a sign of cataracts or an eye injury. If the eyes been injured a vet can give you eye ointment. The eye should clear up if not injured too badly but may still have sight problems.

Cataracts occur usually in older guinea pigs but if a cataract happens suddenly it can be a sign of Diabetes. If this happens look for other signs such as frequent and excessive drinking, and a constant wet bottom. If these symptoms do occur take the guinea pig to a vet who will confirm whether it's diabetes or not and give you proper care instructions.
