It shouldn't be. It might have been something the hamster ate, but I would advise you to get him checked out by the vet as he might have an infection.

Normally if an owner is concerned about the length of their pets claws then they will take them to the vets to get them cliped as there is a point on the nails that if you cut past will cause the hamster to bleed, maybe even to death. Therefore there is not a special job where all you do is clip hamsters nails, however this and many other jobs are part of being a vetenary nurse (an assistant to a vet)
