I want to preface my answer with the caveat that it is NEVER a good idea to give a cat any medication without consulting a veterinarian. While many "human" meds are also used in felines, many are NOT, and those that are need specifically calibrated dosages for the feline species. Your veterinarian will be able to calibrate the correct dosage for your cat.

That said, yes, Bactrim is sometimes prescribed for cats. I have used it (under veterinary supervision) with my own cats. My vet uses a mail order pharmacy that specializes in compounding "human" meds for cats. The dosage is specific for the cat being treated.

There are many "human" meds that also are prescribed to cats. Right now I have one FIV positive rescue being treated with Doxycycline, which is sometimes used in HIV positive humans. I have a rescue litter or kittens being given interferon as an immune system booster as they never received mother's milk (were orphaned at 1 day) and are missing a lot of the immune system safeguards that come from nursing queens.

And finally I had a cat treated for hepatic lipidosis and she received daily meds of both ursodoil and SamE. It's funny because these are two meds my son currently takes to ward off veno-occlusive disease due to the chemo for his leukemia.

The amoxicillian your vet may prescribe for your cat is the same antibiotic often prescribed for people (that pink syrupy stuff).

So, human meds are often used for cats, but I cannot stress enough that your vet needs to calibrate the dosage. An error in dosage can result in death.

Yes, you can use milk of magnesia with Bactrim DS, but it's advisable to space them out. Antacids like milk of magnesia can interfere with the absorption of some medications, including antibiotics.
