Cerberus is the guard dog of Hades and has three dog heads and a snake for a tail. He insures that no one who crosses into Hades (the dead) will ever escape.
(Scylla is also another name for Cerberus)
The name of the three headed dog from Greek mythology was Cerberus. Cerberus was employed to Hades the god of the underworld. His job was to guard the death portal into Tartarus. To make sure that none of the living enter and that none of the dead leave. The only two people that could accomplish getting past the beast were Hercules and Odysses
As a veterinarian for over thirty years I have not yet seen a three-headed dog, however, being a huge fan of ancient Greek mythology I am familiar with Cerebrus, the infamous three-headed dog.
Cerebrus was the guardian of Hades (the Underworld where the spirits of the dead resided) in ancient Greek and Roman mythology. His three heads were thought to represent the past, present, and future. He had a taste for live meat so the spirits of the dead could enter, however, no living being could.
Cerebrus was a fierce guardian to the entrance of the Underworld, however, in the final labor of Hercules, he was able to capture Cerebrus and bring him up to the living world. However, Hercules eventually returned Cerebrus to his rightful position, guarding the entrance to Hades once again.
There are some of you who may be familiar with another fictional three-headed dog, "Fluffy" from "Harry Potter" fame. He was supposedly obtained by Hagrid from a "Greek chappie" (probably the reference paying homage to the origin of Cerebrus). Hagrid lent him to the headmaster as an aid in protecting the "Philosopher's Stone." Fluffy was a fierce creature, but did have a weakness, he could not resist music and would fall asleep at The Sound of Music, which was how he was circumvented to obtain the stone. After the stone was destroyed Hagrid set him free in the Forbidden Forest where he still resides.
