Why do dogs lick?

Dog's lick for food or when they want food. It is no kind of action to show that it loves you dogs do that throughout sniffing. actually because it is a habbit and they also lick theirselves to clean themselves actually both of you are wrong. if a dog licks you just a little bit, (once or twice at a time) it sees you as its master, and respects you and your personal space. if it licks you a lot, (at a time) it sees you as its playmate, lower in the pack than him/her or its just excited for something, or wants something from you. and in #1 as you said, it doesnt show that they love you, well for them respect is love. And sniffing is just a form of seeing where you have been, who you have interacted with, showing that they miss you, not showing that they love you. then they must really love that mailbox. #2 and it is not a habit. If a horse is bored he may "windsuck" also called cribbing. If he does do this then he needs some entertainment , try providing horse safe toys to keep him from getting bored. It is important that horses do not windsuck, this can cause weight loss.
