Hibernation is an inactive, sleep-like state for extended periods that some animals enter during extreme winters to remain alive without food for long periods. The body temperature of a hibernating animal is lower than normal. Also its heartbeat and breathing slows down considerably.
In winters when the environment is very cold and food is scarce, hibernation enables these animals to remain alive without food in three ways. First the body temperature of the animals is reduced below the normal temperature, reducing the expenditure in energy in keeping the body warm. Second, lack of physical activity also cuts down on energy requirements. Finally these animals have a large reservoir of fat stored in the body which is used up during the period of hibernation.
Hibernation for some animals can last for several weeks stretching across the worst period of winter. For others the hibernation may consist of several stretches of a few days interrupted by in between periods of arousal when the body temperature is restored to normal.

a grizzly bear because it hibernates and its body tempature drops
The Arctic ground squirrels holds the record for the longest hibernation period, which can last up to nine months. During this time, their body temperature drops to near freezing and their heart rate decreases significantly to conserve energy.
maybe they do because they're mammals this is the best answer for this question
During hibernation, an animal's metabolic rate slows down significantly, reducing the need for energy and thus lowering body temperature, heart rate, and breathing rate. They live off stored body fat until they wake up.
During hibernation, an animal's metabolic rate decreases significantly to conserve energy. Its heart rate and breathing slow down, and the body temperature drops to match the external environment. This state of reduced activity allows the animal to survive on stored fat reserves until food becomes more plentiful.

mostly just mammals hibernate such as bears but some frogs also hibernate
It hides under something or anywhere where it's dark, wet and cold.
This is from wikipedia:Hibernation is a state of inactivity and metabolic depression in animal, characterized by lower body temperature, slower breathing, and lower metabolic rate.slower breathing, so yes your tortoise does respire when it hibernates
The same way it helps any animal that hibernates - it protects if from the extreme cold of winter.
polar bears eat, just like any other animal that hibernates.
