Over hunting, habitat destruction are the biggest threats to animals today. Sometimes, with proper measures, species can recover, as in the bald eagle. But if left alone to their own devices, it's a guessing game, one in which the animal usually loses.

What happens if you abandon animals?

Well what happens is that you sell the animal you are abandoning, and then say people come in to the animal shelter and if the animal you abandoned is still OK to live, then they could either buy or rent the animal. But if not well enough to take home, then the abandoned animal will get killed. But if by abandon you mean to simply walk away from the animal without even bringing it to a shelter, then what happens depends on a few things. The assumption is that you are talking about a pet. Abandoning a pet is a serious betrayal; presumably you accepted responsibility for the care and upkeep of the animal, and you are failing to live up to that responsibility. Abandoning a pet, no matter what other conditions there are, will cause the animal stress. Yes, animals do experience stress. If you abandon the animal inside a building with no way for the animal to escape, it will suffer hunger and thirst, among many other things.
