if you don't nuter male cats they can help make kittens, but its not more of nutering your cat (if you have one, that is a male) its more about nutering or spaying stray animals, because they are more responsible for all the extra cats.

If left entire (not spayed), bitches will have seasons ("come into heat") approximately every 6 months. At this time the owner must be very careful, as the bitch will attract entire male dogs (this could cause road accidents or there may be an acidental mating) and many have behavioral abnormalities. Some bitches have a pseudopregnancy ("false pregnancy") after the season, which can cause them to behave very abnormally (sometimes becoming aggressive, or posessive) and produce milk.

If a bitch is not spayed, her chances of getting mammary tumours are much higher; this risk is virtually eliminated if she is spayed before or after her first season. When older, entire females are also at risk of pyometra (infection in the uterus); a potentially fatal condition which can be very risky and expensive to treat.

Ask your vet for advice, but if you are not planning to breed a bitch (this needs experience and again, can be expensive) it is best to have her spayed.
