Tipping over water and feed buckets are things that horses just do sometimes and it's up to us, the owners, to figure out how best to stop it. Horses drink A LOT of water, especially in the summertime. Without enough water, not only can the horse suffer from dehydration, impaction colic can occur, which is dangerous. So, do everything you can to make sure that your horse has plenty of clean water everyday. As for water in the stall, you can buy little metal hangers at Tractor Supply or other farm/equine supply store for about a dollar apiece. They are a simple design that have a hook to hang the water bucket and a rounded metal piece that loops over and protects the hook so the horse can't snag their lips or nose on it and cut themselves. A very simple and effective investment. For outside, use a water trough, not a bucket. You can get a 40 gallon water trough for about $30 or so. It's heavy enough that they can't tip it over. You can also use your imagination and get creative in order to save money. For instance, a 50 gallon barrel cut in half can serve as a water trough, just make sure that it's clean, not rusty and has no chemicals in it.

When to water horses?

once a weekhorses should always have fresh water available when they're in the stall and in the pasture. if you're trailering them, put a plastic trash bag in a bucket and fill it with water and tie it so it wont spill in the trailer. then when you stop you can let the horse out and untie the bag and it will be full of water while still in the bucket and easy to carry.

Should a horse always have access to fresh clean water and food?

Yes! Horses need lots of water! Make sure it is clean before they drink. Also make sure it is in a easy place for them to get toyes, even when in the field. there should be water for them to access at all times. Not if the horse just "pigged out" on hay and oats. It could bloat up with air/water and die! Let the horse rest after a hot workout or lots of eating away from lots of water or just give one inch in a bucket.

Should you let your horse drink a bucket of cold water directly after a ride?

Not unless you want to give him a serious bout of colic. If you have to give your horse water directly after a hard ride, then give him about 1/3 - 2/4 of a bucket of tepid water in his stall. wait until he cools down before giving him any more.Hope this helpsxxx

Why won't your horse drink water?

There are two possibility's. 1. Your horse is dehydrated if your horse is dehydrated and won't drink any water, then you should try adding half a bucket of Gatorade should get just a little feeding bucket and fill it up half way with water then you should fill the rest with a Gatorade flavor. You should probably buy a few flavors in case your horse doesn't like the one you picked. 2. Your horse is stressed out. Maybe you travel too much or just work them too hard. You should give them a while off from being ridden maybe 5 days ----- to a week. They should get plenty of rest, treats , baths , and lots of water. ( you may want to add Gatorade, read paragraph number 1 for help with the Gatorade)
