"Bute", phenylbutazone, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that is used to help treat pain associated with musculoskeletal system and to treat fever and inflammation. It is commonly used by horse owners t treat chronic pain conditions such as Arthritis. However, care should be exercised when using bute as it can lead to the formation of gastric ulcers because it also affects the stomachs ability to secrete protective enzymes that would normally prevent GI ulcers. Bute should not be used for longer than 3 times a day and should be used at the lowest effective dose because the risk of GI ulcers is directly related to dosing--the higher the dose and the longer the use, the more risk of ulcers developing. Bute will also show up in most any testing, so should not be used for any horses showing, and is not allowed for use in horses going to slaughter.
