Due to the changing climate, polar bear reproduction is at an all-time low. Polar bears mate in the spring and females will mate for the first time between the ages of six and eight years. They ovulate only during intercourse and it may takes several tries before mating is successful. The female gives birth during the early winter, after an eight month gestation period.

Female polar bears experience a reproductive cycle known as delayed implantation. After mating in the spring, the fertilized egg remains in a state of dormancy until the female enters a period of hibernation during the winter. If the female polar bear has gained enough weight to support a pregnancy, the fertilized egg will then implant in the uterus, leading to the birth of cubs in the den the following winter.
