Basenjis are known as the "barkless dog" breed because they produce a unique sound called a "barroo" instead of a typical bark. While they can make other vocalizations, they are not known for barking.
the basenji - as opposed to actual barking, it makes a more yodeling sound.
Basenji dogs are considered fairly rare in the US compared to other breeds. They are not as commonly seen as some popular breeds like Labrador Retrievers or German Shepherds, but there are still breeders and enthusiasts who work to promote and preserve the Basenji breed in the country.
We refer to ours as a dachsenji. The rescue we adopted her from had conducted DNA testing that revealed that she's 50% basenji and 50% dachsund, but she is huge compared to other pictures of dachsenjis that I've seen people post. She has the full height of a basenji, but also the length of a dachsund, so it's an interesting combination.
Roar? More like bark! Basenji hounds don't and can't bark.
I think the Basenji is named for the Egyptian god of dogs and a Basenji's head looks like the god's face.
A Basenji is quite independent and also quite picky. In ways the Basenji is also cat-like in the body anatomy.
they are protective and small they are also a mix of a basenji and a chiuaua but these breeds are rare
The Basenji didn't have any dogs bred to make it.
The basenji is the only dog that can not bark.
