The invention of the ox collars seems to have come along a little to late to make any difference to farming practices, although I believe some African farmers are being encourage to adopt harness rather than yokes. A decent ox collar appears not to have been invented until the late 1930's by which time tractors were becoming the norm. Apparently an ox collar allows the animal to pull from a lower point than a yoke. It is claimed that one ox in harness can do as much work and pull as much as two ox in a yoke.
