Best Answer

The dun dilution gene causes red pigment on the body to be diluted to flat tan or "peanut butter" shade, sometimes with some subtle red tones, and it dilutes black pigment on the body to slate or dove-gray.

The dun dilute gene does not appear to dilute the color where primitive markings exist on the horse. The primitive markings include dorsal stripe, ventral stripe, leg barring, wither bar, neck cape, cob webbing on the forehead, and other markings. Not all horses display all markings.

When a copy of the mutation for the dun dilution is on a black base coat color, the color is called grulla.

When a copy of the mutation for the dun dilution is on a bay base coat color, the color is called dun, bay dun, or zebra dun.

When a cop of the mutation for the dun dilution is on a chestnut base coat color, the color is called red dun.

Dun is a solid color with primitive markings such as a dorsal stripe, zebra bars and maybe a shoulder bar. Grey is a modifier gene that can turn any color base coat into a grey (whitish) coat color over time. So a foal born dun could grey out over time so long as it carries the gene for grey. Some duns or buckskins are very pale and may look grey but are not.

What color horse would you get if you bred a dun colored horse to a golden palomino?

Dun can be red dun, blue dun or dun. If we assume that the dun is A-Dndn or A-DnDn We know the palomino is --eeCrcr 50% of the foals have the Crème allele and therefore be dilute. 50% of the foals (if the Dun parent is heterozygous Dndn) will have the Dun allele. If the dun parent is homozygous dun DnDn all foals produced will be dun. If the Dun horse is A-Dndn and Ee at the extension site. 50% of the foals will be red based. This could be chestnut, red dun, dunalino (palomino and dun), 50% will be non-red. This could be bay, dun, dunskin (dun and buckskin) If the Dun horse is A-DnDn and Ee at the extension site. 50% of the foals will be red dun or dunalino 50% of the foals will be dun or dunskin. If both the stallion and the mare carry the true black allele a there is the possibility that a resulting foal could be a grulla or a crème dilute grulla. If either or both of the parents are color tested, the percentages would be simple to calculate. Examination of the parents, grandparents and any offspring produced would shed light on what the true possibilities are for this mating.

You breed a dun horse the same way you would breed all others - a horses color does not change the way they need to be bred, the only thing you would need done specially is if your horse has problems - previous breeding complications, tissue scarring, infections - but you would need to see your vet about those implications.

What color should hourses be?

They can be a wide varity of colors: buckskin dun (several types of dun, like yellow dun, red dun, and just plain dun) bay black brown gray (This is the correct term for a "white" horse-they start a different color and gradually lose pigment until they appear white) palomino cremello (often confused with albino, but there are no albino horses) perlino chestnut and roan (there's blue roan, red roan and strawberry roan). Horses can look just about every color except green, unless your gray horse has some grass stains.
