No animal can have guided flight without wings. The closest there is to true flight without wings are spiderlings, which have no control of direction, like a hot air. Spiderlings (baby spiders) are able to fly using very fine silk called gossamer. They will let a long strand of this silk out and they use it to ride the wind, similar to a kite or hot air balloon. In fact, it is often called 'ballooning' or 'kiting'. Spiderlings use this method to disperse so they will not compete for food with their parents or siblings. Spiderlings have been found on atmospheric data balloons nearly as high as 5 km (3.1 miles), and in the sails of ships more than 1600 km (1,000 miles) from shore. Some animals which appear to fly without wings actually don't fly but they glide e.g. flying lemur of Philippines and the various gliders of Australia, members of the possum family. Like the so-called flying squirrel, they have skin membranes which stretch from their wrists to their ankles. They can only glide from trees and high places to safety below: this is safe for them as the skin acts as a parachute with air resistance. There are also some reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects capable of gliding without true wings. For a list of these other gliding creatures, see the discussion page.
