Birds do not sweat and in hot weather the comb acts as a tiny little cooling organ where the blood flows close to the surface of the exposed skin. Air moving over the comb helps to dispel heat as the blood moves in the comb.

Chickens do not sweat, the blood circulates close to the surface of both the comb and wattles and is cooled. Breeds such as Silkies and polish hens have very fine feathers in this area but still get cooling from this area because the feathering is so fine as to resemble hair.
