The cecum is a pouch-like structure located at the beginning of the large intestine, connecting the ileum (the last part of the small intestine) to the colon. It plays a role in the digestion and absorption of nutrients, as well as housing beneficial gut bacteria. The cecum also contains the appendix, a small tube that may have immune functions, although its exact role is still a subject of research.
