History tells us extinction. The Dinosaurs existed far, far longer on this planet than what the human race has been around. As humans, we have no natural predators, and nothing to slow the spread of our species. We as a species are having a profoundly negative effect on the planet, due to overpopulation and the price of technology. Our end is inevitable, though the reason remains to be seen. It could be a supervirus, it could be a catastrophic nuclear war, or even asteroids or supervolcanoes. I don't mean to cast doom or depress you with this answer, because I don't believe personally that the end will be anytime soon. We are the most intelligent beings to ever inhabit this beautiful planet, and we could eliminate some of the threats posed to us ourselves if we could just pull together for a common cause. Sadly, greed and intolerance is holding us back. In this day and age you would think that people starving to death or being mass murdered would be a sad footnote in history.

the world will still be here,what will happen is that we ,all of us have to go through times of great tribulation which is happening now,but things will get tighter as this system of governments will all be broken including the two world powers ie uk and theus known as united nations will also be fragmented.we can see things happening now where people want fair not corrupt ruling ,then we will see false corrupt religion collapse.all this is put in place by our creator his name jehovah .this was his hebrew name by his chosen people which has been taken out of The Bible by christendom.shortly and certainly not this mayan thing ,but a time that no one knows only the grand creator himself.he will bring his war that of armageddon.this system run by satan will be eliminated and the kingdom that we all pray for ,the lords prayer ,this heavenly kingdom government will be here and people will have to recognise our father and grand creator...if you think this is bunkem then if i were you i would check it out in the bible....len

Scientifically, the end of the world is possible when the sun uses up all of it's hydrogen and creates a supernova. The Earth might get caught in the supernova, and the Earth will be too hot for any organisms to survive.

+++

Almost. The Sun won't end as a supernova because it is far too small. Instead it will probably become a red giant, swelling possibly enough to engulf the Earth in its atmosphere. Everything combustible will be burnt, and the all water will evaporate.

It is true that the Sun is very slowly expanding and getting brighter right now. The reason for this is that as it is burning hydrogen to helium in the core the amount of hydrogen there gradually decreases. In order to keep the energy generation rate the same, the temperature and density in the core must rise. This has the effect that the energy can flow to the surface a little faster and it puffs up the outer layers (as well slightly brightening the Sun). When the Sun runs out of hydrogen in its core completely (which won't be for another 5 billion years or so) nuclear reactions will stop there, but they will continue in a shell around the core.

he core will contract (since it is not generating energy) and as it contracts it will heat up. Eventually it will get hot enough to start burning helium into carbon (a different nuclear reaction). While the core is contracting the hydrogen burning around it heats will heat up the outer layers which will expand, and while they do that they will cool. The Sun will then become what is called a Red Giant and its radius will be large enough to envelop the Earth!

Eventually the Sun will also run out of helium in its core. When this happens the core will contract again, but it will never be able to get hot enough to start burning any other elements into anything else. There will still be nuclear reactions of helium and hydrogen in shells around the core though, and these will continue to heat up the outer layers and cause them to move outwards. The core will eventually turn into what we call a white dwarf star, which is an extremely small (roughly Earth sized) dense star. A white dwarf does not generate energy so it will just slowly cool as it shines.

The outer layers of the Sun will turn into what we call a "planetary nebula" (although it has nothing to do with planets) and gradually drift out into the interstellar medium. The Sun will never explode (even though more massive stars can and do). The difference is that the Sun isn't massive enough to ignite anything past helium in its core. More massive stars continue nuclear burning until they start making iron. This creates an unstable core which will then explode in a supernova explosion.
