A serpentine is where the horse goes in a snake like movement across the arena so for example a 3 loop serpentine is where the horse does a kind of S shape. So the horse would start for example at C do a kind of 1/4 circle to S then curve into I go straoght for a few paces curve again to the right to B curve into X go straight for a few paces and bend left into V and then do the same movement all over again going to V then F then L and finishing the movement on A. Imagine the arena looks like the one below - hope this helps. :)
