Besides the common dog or cat, I have found the ferret to be an excellent pet. They have a wonderful personality, they are quite humorous, quiet, very loving, but full of energy, and they will steal anything they take a fancy to and can carry away. They really are funny in their behavior and keep us laughing. Personally I prefer male ferrets. They just appear to be more engaged than the females, but that's just a personal opinion.
Note: ferrets require a lot of time and attention and are excellent pets with proper care, they are high maintenance and expensive as pets.
Rats can also be good pets, especially if you want something that is easy maintenence.
