As with many species of birds, male hummingbirds are typically more brightly colored than females. In North America, the most common species of hummingbird are the Ruby-Throated and the Rufous. Both species are sexually dimorphic (meaning you can tell the difference between a male and a female by looking at them). Male Ruby-Throated hummers have a bright red gorget (or bib) that the females lack. Likewise, male Rufous hummers have a bright orange gorget, while females do not. When hummingbirds are young and sexually immature, males and females can appear identical. Also, there are a couple of species, such as the Berylline and Buff-bellied hummingbirds, where the color variation between an adult male and female are difficult to distinguish.

No. The kangaroo rat is not a pouched mammal, or marsupial. The kangaroo rat is completely unrelated to the marsupil known as the kangaroo; nor is it related to the rat-kangaroo, the smaller species of kngaroos.

Kangaroo rats are native to North America. Kangaroo rats are placental mammals, and quite different to rat-kangaroos, which are marsupials that are native to Australia. Kangaroo rats can be found in the arid and semi-arid areas of North America, specifically, Canada, the United States and Mexico, as long as there is some grass or other vegetation.
Kangaroo mice are quite different to kangaroos, kangaroo rats and rat-kangaroos. There are two species of kangaroo mice in North America, but several more species in Australia. They are quite unrelated to kangaroos or rat-kangaroos, but they are related to the North America kangaroo rats. Kangaroo mice in Australia are more commonly known as native hopping mice. There are several species of hopping mice, and they tend to inhabit sandy deserts, rather than grasslands.
Kangaroo rats do not live in the cold desert. They are found only in the hot deserts of North America.
