Dartmoor ponies are adapted to dartmoor for many reasons. They can eat gorse in the winter when all the other vegitation has died out. They are exellent jumpers. They can make fields ready for farming by eating all the plants without poison. Many more reasons! Also they are very hardy!
Probably the oldest breed of pony with the purest bloodlines in the UK would be the Exmoor, which is now quite rare. It is estimated that the Exmoor migrated to what is now England approximately 130,000 years ago. Physically, this pony is nearly indistinguishable from wild horses of mainland Eurasia. A Dartmoor pony originates from Dartmoor, and is now crossbred with other ponies released onto the moor. An Exmoor pony is from Exmoor, and is purebred. They are typically stouter and darker coloured that Dartmoors.

Well this will depend on if you consider Scotland as part of Britain. If you do, then that would be the Shetland pony with a maximum height limit of 10.2 hands. If you do not, then the Welsh Mountain Pony (section A) has a maximum height limit of 12 hands, the closest runners up would be the Dartmoor and Exmoor at 12.2 hands each.
