You are probably referring to the millipede of which there are about 1000 different species. They are somewhat misnamed since they have anywhere from 36 to about 400 legs (depending on the species), but they sure look like they have a million.

You might also be referring to the centipede which has 24 to about 200 legs, again depending on the species.

You can easily tell the two apart by the fact that the millipede has a rounded body with two pairs of legs on each segment, whereas the centipede has a flattened body with a single pair of legs per segment - that is if you can get one to stay still long enough to tell.

The millapede.

However a millapede is not an insect as insects only have six legs, anything with more than six legs is not an insect.
