This is lanolin. It is similar to the oils human skin produces. The animals are not harmed to collect the lanolin. They are given a haircut, then the wool is boiled. Lanolin is has natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, is strong, helps heal, and hydrate, keep moisture in the skin as a cream or lotion, or keep moisture away from the skin when used in clothing. Quite a superior natural product.
