There are several quetzals that make up the genus Pharomachrus of the family Trogonidae, order Trogoniformes. The resplendent quetzal is classified as Pharomachrus mocinno. It is the national bird of Guatemala.

Quetzals are in the Trogonidae family and include several species. Most are in the genus Pharomachrus but one species is in the genus Euptilotis. A binomial name includes the genus and the species. Since a quetzal can be any of six species, a single binomial name is not possible.
